How to Fold and Ship Your Wool Rug for Color Repairs or Cleaning

At DyeGenie, we make it easy to send your rug in for expert color restoration or deep cleaning. To ensure your rug arrives safely and in good condition, please follow the instructions below. These steps are specifically designed for wool rugs, which require careful handling and breathable packaging.

✅ Step-by-Step: Folding Your Wool Rug for Shipping

1. Start with the Rug Upside Down
Place your rug on a clean surface with the back side (woven side) facing up. This protects the delicate wool pile during folding.

2. Fold the Rug Into Thirds Widthwise

  • Take one long edge of the rug and fold it toward the center.

  • Do the same with the opposite long edge so they meet (or slightly overlap) in the middle.
You’ll now have a long, narrow strip that’s one-third of the rug’s original width.

3. Fold That Strip Onto Itself

  • Fold one end of the rug strip over the center.

  • Then fold the opposite end on top of that—like folding a letter into thirds or fourths depending on the rug’s length.

  • The result should be a compact rectangle that’s easier and more affordable to ship.

Important: Never roll the rug! Rolled rugs take up more space, cost more to ship, and can cause creasing in some cases.

🛑 What Not to Do

  • Do NOT wrap the rug in plastic. Rugs—especially ones with moisture or urine—must be able to breathe. Plastic traps moisture and can cause mildew, odor, or damage.

  • Do NOT use shrink wrap, garbage bags, or bubble wrap. These materials do not allow airflow and can be harmful in transit.

✅ How to Secure the Rug

  • Use binder twine, cotton string, or straps to keep the folded rug secure.

  • You can also wrap it in shipping paper, kraft paper, or a breathable fabric sheet if you’d like, but it’s not required.

  • Make sure the rug is tightly bound so it doesn’t come undone during shipping.
